Steve McClaren Lookalike Travels to Australia to Support England’s Lionesses in Women’s World Cup

Andy Milne, a beloved fan-favourite known for his resemblance to former football player Steve McClaren, has made his way to Australia to cheer on the England Lionesses in the upcoming 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup matches.

Milne gained popularity during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar for his infectious enthusiasm and resemblance to McClaren. He was spotted near Sydney’s iconic Harbour Bridge, carrying a replica trophy and mingling with England supporters, some of whom wore masks resembling his lookalike.

Having attended every Men’s World Cup since he was 19, Milne, also known as ‘that World Cup guy’, had never been to a Women’s World Cup. In response, Tourism Australia extended a warm invitation for him to attend the tournament alongside his daughter Laila, who is currently residing in Sydney.

Milne, a retired teacher from Northwich, Cheshire, has been a supporter of women’s sports and played a role in establishing the girls’ football team at The Grange School in Cheshire, allowing his daughter to participate.

Expressing his excitement for the trip, Milne said, “My favourite thing about the World Cup is meeting new people in new places, and there’s no place more welcoming than Australia. Since arriving, everyone I’ve met has been wonderful, and I can’t wait to meet more locals, fans, and experience the positive and inviting atmosphere. This is my first Women’s World Cup, and I’m thrilled to be Down Under for it. I’m buzzing to watch England take on Haiti this weekend, and hopefully, football is coming home.”

England, the reigning European Champions, will play their first game against Haiti on Saturday, 20 July, at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Queensland.

Sally Cope, Tourism Australia’s Regional General Manager for UK & Northern Europe, highlighted the significance of sport in Australian culture and expressed delight in inviting Milne to be a part of the Women’s World Cup, acknowledging his passion for football and his enjoyment of connecting with new people.

Milne will be in Australia for a week, supporting the Lionesses in their opening match and also attending the Matildas’ game against Ireland’s Girls in Green on Thursday, 20 July. During his stay, he met up with football enthusiast TikToker @samanthajademiller in Sydney.
