Hurd & Co, a distinguished Somerset-based company celebrated for its craft industry expertise, is thrilled to announce the 2024 launch of its UK Training Academy. This forward-thinking online academy is crafted specifically for home-based crafters eager to transform their hobbies into thriving business ventures.
From its modest beginnings as a Somerset table-top knitting hobby to becoming a multi-award-winning enterprise, Hurd & Co exemplifies dedication in the craft sector. Hosted on the online Skool platform, the academy offers three extensive courses: “How to Start,” “Stand Out,” and “Sell at Your First or Next Craft Fair.” This comprehensive training is akin to a “business in a box” solution.
The academy provides 12 modules in each course, thoroughly curated to navigate participants through every step of establishing and maintaining a flourishing craft business. It has garnered official recognition from the Rural Living Show in Taunton, emphasising its commitment to craft excellence.
Behind Hurd & Co is the inspiring Dawn Hurd. Overcoming personal challenges in 2009 as a mother of three and facing 8 miscarriages, Dawn transitioned from fitness and health to the craft industry. Her decision to invest around £18,000 in coaching with leading business provider Big Business Events marked a turning point from incurring losses at craft fairs to securing four-figure sales at notable events like the 2019 Pure London Fashion Show’s United Nations installation.
Dawn’s journey now underpins the UK Training Academy, designed to equip budding craft entrepreneurs with essential skills. The academy mirrors Hurd & Co’s philosophy, deeply rooted in nature and community values.
In tandem with the academy, Hurd & Co also runs “Sit and Knit,” a complimentary weekly community group held both in-person and online, aimed at nurturing creativity and companionship, especially among the elderly.
Upholding its social responsibility, Hurd & Co supports Age UK Somerset, dedicating 5% of every adult scarf sale to the charity. The company also advocates for sustainable practices in the wool industry, with King Charles III as the patron of its wool campaign.
Dawn Hurd states, “Empowering individuals go beyond where they are currently to generate an income, turn hobbies into profitable enterprises is a daily passion of mine.”
