Cargilfield School, a prominent independent co-educational preparatory school in Edinburgh for children aged 3 to 13, is delighted to announce the results of its 2023 Education Scotland inspection.
Cargilfield School has received an outstanding report across all four inspection categories. The school achieved an excellent rating for “raising attainment and achievement” and a very good rating for “leadership of change learning,” “learning, teaching and assessment,” and “ensuring well-being, equality, and inclusion.”
Education Scotland’s report highlights that the school’s motto, “Where Learning is an Everyday Adventure,” is clearly evident in the exciting and motivating experiences it offers to children. The inspection also commends the school for successfully striking a balance between achieving outstanding academic standards and nurturing the emotional and mental well-being of its students.
The report lauds the school for its highly effective leadership and describes its staff as an enthusiastic, highly skilled, and forward-looking group of teachers dedicated to developing each child as an individual. The governance and strategic direction of the school are regarded as of very high quality, with a clear and shared vision for its future.
Regarding attainment, Cargilfield pupils are noted as working hard to achieve their potential while demonstrating exceptional confidence, leadership, and attainment levels beyond their age and stage, particularly in Literacy. Pupils are motivated to learn and exhibit a positive work ethic. The report also highlights that pupils lead active and healthy lifestyles, feeling safe, happy, and well looked after at school.
Cargilfield School is described as having a calm, happy, family ethos that fosters a supportive, inclusive, home-like environment where children can be themselves. The school offers an impressive range of extracurricular activities, engaging opportunities, and stimulating lessons that challenge children’s thinking. The report emphasises the sustained, outstanding levels of attainment across the school and curriculum areas.
Headmaster Rob Taylor expressed his pride in the school’s achievements and its recognition as a sector leader across Scotland. He welcomed prospective visitors to experience the school’s excellence firsthand and arrange private visits on any school day.
The inspection involved a team of five inspectors from Education Scotland, including a serving headteacher and a lay inspector from outside the education sector. Over their five-day visit, they thoroughly evaluated the school’s provision, engaging with staff, parents, governors, and children to ensure a comprehensive assessment.
The Nursery provision was not included in this inspection.
