On Friday 15 September 2023, the national Scottish Children’s Health Awards were unveiled to celebrate courageous children and young people and those making a difference to their health and wellbeing. Seven awards were presented during Scottish Children’s Health Week (4-10 September 2023).
William Kilpatrick from Glasgow was the recipient of the Young Achiever Award. William, who was diagnosed with a heart condition before birth, has endured two open-heart surgeries before the age of five and now has a pacemaker fitted. His mother Kat said she is “so proud of the young man he’s becoming”. William dreams of becoming a police officer and is hoping to sign up to become a police youth volunteer.
Nicola Boyle earned the Children’s Choice Award for her work as a Health Visitor and GIRFEC named person, helping parents of premature babies. Juliet Harris, Director of Together, won the Healthcare Rights Award for her dedication and commitment to defending the rights of children and young people. The Young Person’s Team at Fife Rape and Sexual Assault Centre was presented with the Improving Life Experiences Award for providing young people with a safe space to explore their feelings and emotions.
Lisa Fisher, Nurse Team Leader in Fife, received the Health and Wellbeing Award for providing on-site nursing care and support to children and staff within special schools. Health Play Worker Joyce Nolan won the Health-Related Play Award for using play to assist children and young people on their hospital journey. Finally, Dr Patricia Jackson was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her incredible career in paediatrics and her commitment to the rights of children and young people.
