Transforming the North’s Transport: Transport for the North Launches Consultation

Transport for the North (TfN) has today launched a 12-week statutory consultation for its revised Strategic Transport Plan (STP) for the North of England. The plan sets out the case to transform the North’s transport system and will be used to shape the statutory body’s advice to government on the transport priorities for the region.

The public can take part in the consultation by attending local partner meetings, virtual workshops or drop-in sessions across the North. There will also be an online virtual consultation room on TfN’s website. The consultation period runs from Thursday 25 May to Thursday 17 August.

The revised STP’s vision has been updated to reflect a wider set of outcomes the North wants to achieve by 2050, including transforming economic performance, decarbonising the transport network and significantly reducing transport-related social exclusion. It also includes metrics to measure progress over the coming years.

Lord McLoughlin, Chair of TfN, said: “We want to hear from as many people as possible as part of our consultation for the strategic transport plan, on how we should transform transport in the North. Your views, comments and feedback will help us shape the plan to deliver the outcomes needed by citizens, businesses, and places across the region.”

He added: “The evidence in this STP shows how with sustained investment, the right policy levers and enabling behaviour change, we can truly transform the North. The final STP is due to be published in early 2024 and will lay the foundations for the transport infrastructure investment for the North for decades to come. This is why it’s vital we hear from as many people as possible.”

According to TfN, investment has the potential to create an economy in the North that would be £118bn p.a. larger in 2050 than current forecast estimates.
