Yesterday, the prestigious Expedition Awards presented by Lord Lieutenant for Greater London, Sir Kenneth Olisa OBE, recognised the very best in leadership, challenge, courage and planning. The award was accepted by Officer Cadet Mirza and Major Terence Hackett for the University Category, awarded for Exercise Arctic Express Leg 9 2022, an adventurous training expedition undertaken by Officer Cadets from London UOTC.
The event, organised by the Greater London Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association, took place at the Lord-Lieutenant and GL RFCA Awards 2023 Yeomanry house, London.
Exercise Arctic Express Leg 9 2022 saw twelve OCdts from London UOTC sail from Reykjavik, Iceland to Scotland in a Challenger 72′ yacht. The aim of the expedition was to encourage team ethos, leadership, and confidence within the cohort. The students were put to work and given specific roles that they had to fulfil in order to keep the boat on track, including roles of engineer and medic, each with specific tasks to learn. Man overboard drills and rotating in 4-hour watches pushed the students to learn the importance of teamwork and relying on their watch buddies to get things done.
The Ulysses Trust, who selected the award from the 95 cadet and reservist expeditions supported in 2022, presented a certificate signed by their Chair, AVM Nick Kurth, to the recipients.
