Back From New York

I’m back from a week long trip to New York, and it was amazing. When I travel, I really like to experience things the way people who live there do. For the trip, we rented an apartment in Brooklyn which was nice and roomy for the 7 of us staying there and I think cheaper than 3 hotel rooms for 6 days.

We had a great time exploring the area in Brooklyn where we stayed which was right off the C line at Lafeyette and Fulton. There’s some really good restaurants there including the one we went to for the Rehearsal dinner (we were there for a wedding) called simply No 7. The restaurant is owned and operated by a friend of My brother-in-law and the food was amazing. As it’s a new restaurant, I’m sure they can use the publicity. No. 7 is located at the intersection of Green and Fulton in Brooklyn NY right at the subway exit for the C line at Lafayette.

James and BullBeside eating great food we also took a trip to downtown Manhattan where I had my photo with the famous Bull Sculpture standing at Morris and Broadway. For me this was really cool. I’ve seen this bull so many times in the press, and it is the inspiration for the t-shirt designs I have in my CafePress Store, CramerTees. I also bought a small replica of the Bull which has the funniest description. It is obviously poorly translated, but what do you want for ten bucks? Here’s the text on the plaque of the replica:

This huge bull is standing in front of the Stock Exchange of Wall Street in New York, America. The bull is strong, powerful. So it means the rising prices of stock exchanging. It’s also a psychology consciousness that people look forward to the rising prices. The Bull of Wall Street is the patron saint of stockjobber.

Did everyone follow that? I had to read it about 3 times before I could make heads or tails of it. At any rate, I got a good laugh out of the plaque and it’s a cool memento to remember my trip there. The funniest thing is this statue isn’t anywhere near the stock exchange (NYSE) which is on Wall Street a few blocks up from this location.

Right across from the NYSE is the AFIUSA building which I have no idea about. I do know that armed guards with M-16 Rifles stood at the doorsteps and anyone getting too close was barked at by a German Shepard. Most people were trying to get good photos of the NYSE. Anyone know what is going on here? I’m curious. The only AFI I know of is the American Film Institute or the Anglicans For Israel group…weird.

It was a good trip and we had lunch at Battery Park, took the Staten Island ferry and saw the Statue of Liberty. Took a stroll through Central Park on the way to the American Museume of Natural History. Had a great time exploring FAO Schwartz on 5th Ave.  We also visited a friend of my Brother-in-law that has an apartment on the 10th floor overlooking the Armory with a perfect view of uptown Manhattan.

I recommend everyone visit New York at least once in their lifetime. It is such an interesting, diverse and incredibly busy city. It’s like no other city I have ever been to. Did I mention how many trees there really are? I was really surprised by this fact. Compared to San Francisco where I work, New York is incredibly green.

As far as trading goes, I really didn’t do any. BGP is still on track for a double digit run and Apple has taken the usual post announcement dive and rebound. BGP is seeing a multi day sell off here that I attribute to profit taking. Both of these stocks are oversold and BGP may be getting pressure from short selling but it isn’t likely to last. Apple is going to be improving on their profit margin because of “Genius” in iTunes 8.0 and BGP continues to prove that people are still buying paper and haven’t completely embraced the digital print devices on the market like Amazon’s Kindle.

The panicky trader in me wants to take the $350+ profit and reinvest it but the long term investor in me knows to ride this one to $10. Ah the joys of the market.
